Artist Series: April Lacheur Part I
The Artist Series is a playful and dynamic addition to Shi Studio’s offerings. The idea of working with the prints of artists first came to me when I was set up beside April Lacheur at the Home and Garden show in 2007. Upon our first meeting, I fell in love with April’s art, her energy, and her story; she was putting herself out there in a unique and genuine way that struck me. She was a nurse by day and self-taught artist by weekend. I wanted to share her work and support her, and an idea struck me: we could collaborate and place her nature-inspired, whimsical art into Shi jewellery. Since then April has grown to be a very well-known BC artist, and to this day her work inspires me.
By learning to paint through experimentation in her studio, April has developed a style that is uniquely identifiable as her own. Her lack of formal training has been more than made up for in her natural gift for capturing the beauty of her surroundings with acrylic paint and ink. Inspired by the rugged beauty of the West Coast, April paints on canvas and wood to depict the beauty of trees, the strength of the ocean, and the magic of the creatures that inhabit her surroundings. April is most well known for her trees with deep twisting roots, symbolizing the human connection with nature.
She has done all this while still practicing as a Registered Nurse. With a history in post open heart surgery, palliative care, and community care, she is now working in a private family practice as a diabetes educator once a week. She has a thriving art business, selling her work at markets, in galleries, and in retail stores across Canada.
April truly values the balance painting brings to her life.
