Ever since I was a teenager, I have had both a deep draw as well as a subtle aversion to trends. I always admired and sought to be like those who could define their own style, setting their own trends and style genres. I wanted to make a statement and I didn’t want to look like everyone else. Mainstream trends seemed boring and uncreative to my teenage self; now, however, I am older and wiser, and see that there is a marriage between fashion trends and self-defined style. Creative designers and style leaders go hand in hand with the mainstream trending aesthetic, influencing each other.

I see this more consciously and practically as I design jewellery and accessories within the context of Shi Studio. When I design, I need to pay attention to the mainstream aesthetic for inspiration, but also attempt to design pieces that hopefully stand apart from the masses. Part of this process is researching colour and trending palates. Luckily, my stunning and diverse collection of Chinese silk brocades consists of over 100 silks!! This allows me to get creative with the colours of the moment, working with my brocades to reflect current fashions and also the unique style of Shi jewellery.

This year’s ‘hot’ colour palette includes some of my favourite colours such as earthy soft blues and greys with splashes of dusty wine and coral. The top Pantone Colour of the Year for 2019 is Living Coral, which the Pantone Colour Institute describes as: "Vibrant, yet mellow, Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression.”

Needless to say, I am delighted to play with these lovely colours, especially the warmth of Living Coral. I am excited to create pieces that profile these mainstream trending colours, helping them stand out in Shi designs.
